My AI Picks, Q1 vs Q4 2026: What Replaced What
My pick for coding, images, video and voice in February 2026, what replaced each one by October, and the vendor dates, prices and specs behind every swap.
If you set up your AI tools in February and haven't touched them since, every one of my picks from then has a newer replacement. Here's my pick for four common jobs in Q1 2026 and what I'd pick now, in Q4. The picks are my opinion. The dates, prices and specs come from the vendors, plus TechNode's launch report for Seedance 2.5.
Coding: Claude Opus 4.6 to Claude Opus 5.5
Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.6 on February 5, 2026, at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Claude Opus 5.5 followed on September 22, 2026, as the first model in the Claude 5.5 family.
Three more Opus releases came in between (Opus 4.7, 4.8 and 5), so some of Anthropic's comparisons below are against Opus 5, not 4.6.
Why I switched:
- Price. Input and output tokens are $4 and $20 per million, down from Opus 4.6's $5 and $25. That's 20% less per token. Cache reads, which Anthropic says make up the majority of agentic and coding costs, are $0.20 per million tokens, 60% less than Opus 5.
- Speed. Anthropic says it generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5.
- Coding. "On our benchmarks, Claude Opus 5.5 leads in agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work," Anthropic writes, adding that benchmark margins have become a less reliable guide to real-world differences.
Images: Nano Banana 2 to GPT Image 2.5
Google's Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) had its latest update in February 2026. Google describes it as the efficiency-focused counterpart to Gemini 3 Pro Image.
OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, 2026, to all ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users, plus two API models: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, which "adds precision for detailed creative work, with longer generation times." The reason it's my pick: OpenAI says it keeps details consistent across multiple edits, and you can comment on an image to change only the part you want.
Video: Seedance 2.0 to Seedance 2.5
ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 was officially released in China in early February 2026. Its technical report says it generates audio and video clips of 4 to 15 seconds, with up to 3 video clips, 9 images and 3 audio clips as references.
Seedance 2.5 launched in July 2026 (TechNode reported it on July 31). ByteDance's page says it can "create videos up to 30 seconds in a single generation, with the option to extend twice." TechNode reports up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips as reference material in one input. Twice the clip length means fewer stitched cuts in a 30-second ad.
Voice: Eleven v3 to Eleven v4
ElevenLabs published Eleven v3 in June 2025. Eleven v4 launched on September 28, 2026, "built on an entirely new architecture," with support for more than 90 languages. ElevenLabs says it's ranked #1 on Artificial Analysis' Provider Voice Arena leaderboard (September 2026) and preferred by about 75% of listeners in blind head-to-head tests against competing models. Those are the company's numbers.
The voiceover in the Short above is Eleven v4, using my own voice clone.
Here's how you get paid
My opinion, no income guaranteed: lots of small teams set up their AI tools once and never looked again. They're paying for seats nobody opens, running older models, and stitching 15-second clips together by hand.
Sell them a stack refresh:
- Audit. List every AI tool they pay for and what each one is actually used for.
- Swap. Test the newer models on their real tasks, side by side with what they use now, and switch only where the new one wins.
- Flat fee. Charge one fixed price for the audit and the swap, and offer a re-check every quarter, since every pick on this list changed between February and October.
