Claude Duet: Anthropic's Agent That Runs Your Back Office
Claude Duet sends a morning brief, chases invoices and preps payroll, and asks before it sends or pays. What it does and how to sell setup.
Anthropic launched Claude Duet, an AI agent that keeps working while you don't. It sends you a brief every morning, chases unpaid invoices, and preps payroll for your review. For anyone who wants to sell AI to small businesses, this is the most useful launch of the month.
What happened
Anthropic announced Claude Duet on October 21, 2026, as a research preview with a waitlist. It starts with Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Team and Enterprise plans aren't included yet. It runs as its own app on iOS and Android and on claude.ai, and it shares usage limits with the rest of your Claude plan.
Here's what Anthropic says it does:
- A morning brief. "Claude Duet briefs you every morning, drafts next steps, then goes quiet until something needs you."
- Inbox and calendar triage. It flags what needs your attention and drafts replies for your approval.
- Money work. It finds unpaid invoices and drafts reminders, and it prepares payroll for your review.
- Check-ins. It looks at your accounts about every few hours and messages you only when something needs you.
It runs on its own virtual machine in the cloud with a browser, so it keeps going when your laptop and phone are off. It carries over your Claude memory, skills and connected apps, and it works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins. The product page shows Gmail, Slack, Stripe, QuickBooks and Shopify among them.
The safety model matters. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you the action and waits for your approval. Some actions stay off-limits even with approval, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts.
Anthropic is also upfront about the limits. The product page says it "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent," and that it can miss something that arrives between check-ins.
Why it matters for builders
Most of the agents I use wait for me to type something. Duet is built to start the work itself, then stop at the points where a human should decide. That pattern, proactive drafting with an approval gate on anything risky, is the right shape for back-office work.
It also moves the hard part. The model can already draft an invoice reminder. What it needs is the right apps connected, clear rules about what counts as urgent, and a person who knows how the business runs. That's configuration work, and most business owners won't do it themselves.
Try it in 15 minutes
Duet is waitlist-only, so start with the parts you control.
- If you're on Pro or Max in the US, join the waitlist from the Claude Duet product page.
- Pick one small business you know well: your own, a friend's, a past client.
- List every app it runs on. Email, calendar, payments, accounting, store, chat.
- Write a one-page operating brief: who the customers are, what "urgent" means, who gets paid when, and which messages should never go out without a human reading them.
- Write the approval rules as a short list. For example: draft any invoice reminder, but never send one to a customer who paid late only once.
- Save it. When your Duet access opens, that brief is your setup script. Until then, you can paste it into a regular Claude project with the same connectors and test how well it triages a week of real email.
Here's how you get paid
My view: a plumber with three trucks is never going to wire QuickBooks and Stripe into an AI agent. You can.
That's an AI operations business, and I'd package it like this:
- Setup fee. Connect their apps, write the operating brief, set the approval rules, and test it for a week against their real inbox.
- Monthly retainer. Tune what counts as urgent, add new workflows as they come up, review what it drafted, and fix what it got wrong.
- Clear boundaries. You own the configuration. The owner keeps the final click on anything that sends money or messages, which is exactly how Duet is designed.
Start with one business you can visit in person. Write down every hour the owner saves. That record is the case study that sells the next ten.
